Written in 1884, The Wild Duck is a symbolically charged tragicomedy that questions the meaning of truth in our lives.
Ibsen uses the fable of the wild duck, which when shot dives into the lake and holds on to the bottom algae so that it no longer returns to the surface, as a metaphor for all the themes in the play. The duck chooses to die rather than survive wounded, but is "saved" by a dog that pulls it from the bottom of the lake, thereby destining it to a second existence confined in an attic of a house.
